ASPIRE Module Spring 2019: Practical Strategies for Strong Writing

The ASPIRE Modules are short, non-credit bearing electives that broaden the training experiences of biomedical sciences trainees. These elective modules provide efficient exposure to topics in four theme areas: Business/Entrepreneurship, Communication, Teaching, and Clinical research.The ASPIRE Modules are optional and open to any biomedical sciences PhD student or postdoctoral fellow who wishes to take them to supplement their research training. Class size may be limited, however, and will vary by module.

Module Title: Practical Strategies for Strong Writing

Directors: Beth Estes, Ph.D. Academic Support Coordinator of the Writing Studio at Vanderbilt University

Content: In this module, experts from the Vanderbilt Writing Studio will teach scientists to become more effective writers. Sessions will focus on understanding reader expectations, foundational principles of argumentative structure, and writing cohesive paragraphs and sentences. A third session will be held that will consist of a hands-on workshop, working with consultants at the writing studio to assist you with a piece of your own work. The practical strategies taught in this module can be applied to all types of documents, from grant applications to peer-reviewed manuscripts.

**Attendance is limited to 24 participants who can attend both sessions. To participate in the hands-on work shop, attendance at the first two sessions is required–Participation in the 3rd session will not be permitted unless the first two sessions are attended.

Time: 3 sessions, 2:30-4pm

  • Jan 22: Making the Argumentative Moves that Matter in Scientific Writing
  • Jan 29: Making the Moves that Matter One Sentence at a Time
  • Feb 5: Hands-on workshop with Writing Studio Consultants

Class size: 24 students

Registration requirement: 2-6 sentence statement of interest

Registration deadline: Friday, January 4, 2019 Extended to Tuesday, January 8, 2019
