Job Opportunity: Associate Program Officer, LabX, Washington, DC
Job Description Summary:
LabX seeks an associate program officer to help oversee its suite of new public engagement projects. Working with the rest of the LabX team, the associate program officer will be involved with the planning, design, and implementation of public-facing programs that serve the LabX mission of empowering young adults to use science and scientific thinking in their daily lives and in their communities.
We are looking for an individual who is willing and eager to experiment with methods for engaging audiences with scientific content that go beyond traditional mechanisms such as science cafes. As such, the candidate must be creative, self-motivated, and able to operate with a high degree of autonomy. Experience working as part of community-focused public engagement efforts is required. A scientific background is encouraged but not required.
Job Description:
Leads one or more programs or projects under general supervision. Conducts research of background material, mechanisms, and potential collaborators. Coordinates project development and ensures the program or project meets its stated objectives. Serves as project lead during implementation and expansion phases of each project. May assist senior staff in raising funds. Applies specific, professional-level knowledge to solve problems requiring the identification and analysis of moderately complex variables. Takes action to solve routine problems in areas of responsibility with guidance or expertise from higher-level staff on more complex problems. Establishes processes and procedures to ensure the effective and efficient operation of program/project.
- Communicates with and facilitates the flow of information among advisory board members, consultants, program or project sponsors, and staff. Coordinates with partners and external organizations.
- Collaborates with experts, partners and sponsors from government agencies, foundations, schools, and other organizations.
- Conducts background research on project. Synthesizes and edits research findings. Translates relevant content to a usable format for project.
- Serves as project liaison. Engages with members of the target audience during project development, implementation, and evaluation.
- Identifies potential mechanisms for project implementation. Works with stakeholders to adapt ideas specifically for each project.
- With assistance from staff, performs financial and administrative tasks related to assigned program(s) or project(s). Creates, maintains, and updates records, databases, and files. Authorizes expenditures, tracks spending, monitors budget, and projects future spending plans.
- Represents the program/project within and outside the organization.
- May assist in raising funds for current and future projects by conducting research on topics for new studies, writing proposals, and identifying potential sponsors. Where applicable, participates in managing funder/member/alumni relations.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent knowledge.
Minimum Experience: Three years of related professional experience in a science field.
Knowledge of issues in applicable discipline of public engagement.
Ability to research and synthesize scientific topics.
Capable of solving varied and complex problems using originality and ingenuity.
Ability to operate using appreciable latitude for independent judgment and action.
Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies’ departments through effective communication. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.
Willingness to travel and interact with stakeholders.
