Job Opportunity: Career Counselor, Ph.D., The Graduate College, The University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ
The Graduate College is seeking to fill the position of Ph.D. Career Counselor. Reporting to the Vice Provost for Graduate Education, the successful candidate for this position will develop a vision, strategy, and plan for enhancing the professional development of doctoral students seeking employment outside of academia. They will develop alumni connections, employer engagement, and career and mentoring opportunities for doctoral students. They will work collaboratively to develop an internship for doctoral students, to provide them with experience outside the academy.
Responsibilities
- Guide, advise, and support graduate students through the career planning, decision making, and job searching processes in multiple employment pathways. Assist graduate students in analyzing their interests and skills and developing career goals. Plan, market, and implement career related programs and gather data to analyze program effectiveness. Develop digital resources and effective strategies for communicating across all constituencies. Establish, strengthen, and maintain relationships between the institution, alumni, and employers.
- Collaborate with the Graduate Center, university department staff, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty and employers to create and deliver career development programming and resources.
- Develop and teach core career workshops (career exploration and planning, resume, interviewing, cv, networking, negotiating a contract, resilience strategies) and seminars that prepare applicants for non-academic and academic jobs— specifically focusing on PhD-level students across disciplines. This position will also develop and manage department-specific requests and will work closely with employers and alumni to identify job opportunities, generate partnerships, and enhance graduate career education.
- Provide career advising and coaching specifically for advanced degree students, requiring specialized knowledge of the PhD hiring landscape across disciplines and industries. Seek out new resources, training opportunities, and best practices in service delivery models for graduate career advising.
- Assess graduate student needs and identify gaps in service to develop a graduate career consultant program.
- Develop and manage an internship program that will build connections for graduate students with employers.
Qualifications:
• Graduate degree (Preferably a Ph.D.)
• Experience advising students on career-related topics
• 3 years collaborative program management experience
• Commitment to working explicitly with graduate students
Preferred Qualifications:
• Ph.D
• Demonstrated teaching and curriculum design experience in higher education
• Experience working with diverse student populations, including international and under-represented students
