Writing Studio: Fall 2020 Opportunities and Programming for Graduate Students
Welcome to the 2020-2021 academic year! In addition to individual writing consultations, the Writing Studio has several opportunities and programs for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty available this fall. Come write with us!
Graduate Writing Groups
This fall, the Writing Studio will offer weekly writing groups for graduate students and postdocs on Monday afternoons from 2-5 p.m. and Friday mornings from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.; all groups will convene virtually. Students are welcome to attend one or both days and are encouraged to commit to attending each week of the six-week session. Sessions begin with a brief 10-minute check-in on Zoom during which participants are invited to share their writing goals for the session. Participants then check in again toward the end of the 3-hour writing session to share their progress. A Writing Studio facilitator is available on Zoom throughout each session to provide an additional sense of community and accountability. To participate, please complete a registration form, which can be found here.
In addition to weekly graduate writing groups, the Writing Studio offers peer review groups. Peer review groups tend to work best when they are discipline-specific, although this is not a requirement for a successful and productive group. Please email simone.mccarter@vanderbilt.edu if you would like to register or to learn more about this opportunity.
Graduate Writing Workshops
The Writing Studio is pleased to offer writing workshops to graduate students and postdocs on Zoom during the fall semester. These workshops provide tools and strategies for writers working on advanced writing projects and cover a range of topics. Teaching Writing Workshop Series
The Writing Studio aims to support the teaching of writing across the disciplines at Vanderbilt and to encourage interdisciplinary conversations about writing pedagogy. Over the course of the academic year, the Writing Studio leads a series of workshops focused on different aspects of teaching writing.
Workshops provide participants with current research, strategies for best practices, and a forum for discussing how these approaches might be adapted to teaching writing in their disciplines. The Teaching Writing Workshop Series is open to all writing instructors. This fall, all workshops will be held virtually via Zoom.
Responding to Student Writing
Thursday 17 September | 12-1:30 p.m.
In this workshop, participants will explore some best practices for responding to their students’ writing. We will discuss effective and generative ways of providing feedback through in-person or virtual conferences as well as through written feedback. Let us know you’re coming!
Fostering Writing and Collaboration in the (Virtual) Classroom
Monday 26 October | 3-4:30 p.m.
This workshop stems from the theories and practices of active and collaborative learning. Participants will learn about and practice techniques they can employ in their own classrooms to get students brainstorming, writing, revising, and working together on both individual and collaborative projects. Let us know you’re coming!
Scaffolding Writing Across the Semester
Tuesday 8 December | 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Participants will learn how to use backward design to scaffold writing projects and assignments throughout the semester. In preparation for Spring 2021, they will also have the opportunity to workshop syllabi for courses with writing components. Participants should bring a draft of a spring course syllabus or another syllabus they wish to redesign. Let us know you’re coming!
Workshops will be facilitated by Dr. Megan Minarich, Assistant Director, Vanderbilt Writing Studio & Tutoring Services. Questions? Please email megan.l.minarich@vanderbilt.edu.
