The Science Communications Manager (Manager) is charged with raising the profile of the Arthritis Foundation (AF) scientific initiatives by creating and managing a variety of content to effectively communicate the impact of our important work. The successful candidate will engage and educate the arthritis community, including patients, donors, researchers, and other key constituents about the Arthritis Foundation’s scientific programs through various modes of outreach.

The Manager will be responsible for writing and producing content for multiple platforms, including press releases, emails, newsletters, scientific publications, presentations, grant applications, and other materials. The Manager will also be responsible for soliciting input on these communications from multiple stakeholders, including our medical and scientific advisors, patients, and internal staff.

It is expected that the successful candidate will have a strong background in the life sciences, especially immunology, biomedicine, and/or other fields related to arthritis. The Manager will possess a deep understanding of the needs of the many public facing communications efforts of the Arthritis Foundation and will proactively seek opportunities to inform those efforts with content related to Science Department initiatives and their impact. In addition, the Manager will occasionally contribute to scientific manuscripts, technical reports, white papers, and commentaries for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

Within the Foundation

The Manager will be responsible for seeking out opportunities to communicate progress on Science Department initiatives to internal stakeholder groups, as well as prepare content that the SVP of Science could utilize for Board, Medical and Scientific Advisory Board, and other important presentations to donors, constituents, and volunteers. The Manager will regularly interface with Development, Marketing and Communications, Help & Support, and Advocacy Departments. In many cases, the Manager will work in conjunction with the Marketing and Communications Department to produce content and ensure a consistent voice throughout all communications.

Outside the Foundation

The Manager will maintain working relationships with various scientific and clinical research experts and regularly seek their input and guidance to ensure the scientific accuracy of the content produced. The responsibilities will also require frequent communication with a select group of the Arthritis Foundation’s most engaged patient volunteers and the internal Advocacy team.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

  1. Working closely with both the Marketing and Science Departments, write and produce content for multiple platforms, including press releases, emails, newsletters, presentations, videos, and other materials, that highlight the impact of Science Department projects in an audience-appropriate way.
  2. Work closely the Marketing Department to understand their calendar of needs for research communications and serve as the main Science Team liaison to Marketing.
  3. Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of all components of the Arthritis Foundation’s scientific programs, including their unique goals and offerings.
  4. Translate complex scientific concepts into easy-to-understand communications.
  5. Solicit input on content from external stakeholders, including researchers, health care practitioners, patients, and caregivers, among others, when appropriate.
  6. Collaborate with the AF Help Line Team and other members of the Science Team to answer questions regarding scientific content.
  7. Serve as subject matter expert for the Marketing Department in terms of content and compilation of statistics that describe the domestic and global impact of arthritis.
  8. Respond to questions coming through our AF Science email address.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  1. A Bachelor of Science degree in a health-related field, or a Bachelor of Art degree in an unaligned field with significant experience in health and sciences written communication is required. A higher degree related to biomedicine (MS, MPH, Ph.D., M.D.) is preferred.
  2. Exemplary written and oral communications skills.
  3. 5-7 years or more of prior work experience in scientific and medical communications is required. Previous experience in communications and/or writing at a health-focused non-profit is preferred.
  4. Previous experience writing government, corporate, and/or foundation grant proposals preferred.
  5. Ability to grasp and communicate complex topics and subject matters to multiple audiences, including donors, partners, the public, and the scientific community.
  6. Previous experience writing scientific manuscripts published in peer-reviewed journals required.
  7. Knowledge of contemporary office software packages and possess a willingness to learn new technologies as they become available.
  8. Prior exposure to working with external stakeholders and demonstrated credibility and efficiency interacting with scientific and medical audiences.
  9. Ability to perform duties and responsibilities independently.
  10. The position is not responsible for supervising other staff positions. Occasional travel is required.
