Job Opportunity: Senior Service Fellow (Medical Epidemiologist), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
CDC’s Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) is interested in placing 2 Senior Service Fellows (epidemiologists or medical epidemiologists) within local or state health department STD programs to 1) collaborate on multi-site research and epidemiologic analyses, and 2) support state and local STD programs with data analyses. Each DSTDP field-assigned Senior Service Fellow will be expected to devote 80% of their time to studies of interest to CDC, including studies of national significance, and 20% to studies, analyses, and projects of interest primarily at the state or local level.
Potential locations for DSTDP Senior Service Fellow assignments include the following:
- Richmond, California (San Francisco Bay area) OR Sacramento, California
- Atlanta, Georgia
- Albany, New York
- New York City, New York
- Austin, Texas
- Nashville, Tennessee
No funds are available for moving expenses.
Duties
The incumbent will:
- Serve as a medical officer and analyzes surveillance data to identify outbreaks and emerging trends in STD.
- Investigate factors associated with high risk for STDs.
- As a result of medical and scientific research, evaluate STD-related programmatic activities and interventions.
- Identify other sources of data useful in understanding and controlling STDs.
- Disseminate study results via presentations at clinical, scientific, and professional meetings and via publications in the peer-reviewed journals.
- Provide clinical and epidemiological support to physicians, epidemiologists, behavioral scientists, and other researchers on the design, implementation, and evaluation of activities related to STD prevention and control.
Senior Service Fellows will have access (via local collaborators) to STD data for analysis. The selected individual will work closely with staff in the local health department, as well as seasoned CDC field epidemiologists/medical epidemiologists.
Basic Qualifications
Education:
Degree: Individuals with a Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent, from a school in the United States or Canada will meet the education requirement. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination.
Highly qualified candidates would possess the following:
- A doctoral-level degree in medicine from an accredited institution of higher learning
- Experience working with STD programs and/or clinics
- Experience working with health departments in the United States
- Proficiency in a statistical analysis software package, such as SAS or R
- A track record of scientific productivity and originality as exemplified by relevant peer-reviewed publications and other evidence of effective written communication skills
- Expertise and experience in knowledge utilization and in communicating scientific concepts, such as through conference presentations relevant to STD epidemiology, or publications with impact on STD prevention and treatment
- Ability to collaborate with other scientific and professional staff on research related to STDs
- Strong verbal, written, listening, and presentation skills
Basic Requirements
- Both US citizens and non-US citizens are eligible.
- Note: Non-US citizens meeting the above degree and specified specialized experience requirements are eligible for noncompetitive appointments under this appointing authority. Citizens of countries on the Non-Aligned list (including China, India, and Switzerland) are eligible for this appointment. Citizens of countries that have been determined by the U.S. Secretary of State as State Sponsors of Terrorism will not be able to obtain a security clearance to work at CDC and should not be considered for this appointing authority. Countries currently on this list include: Cuba, North Korea, Iran, and Syria
- Successful completion of a background investigation.
- Up to 10% travel may be required.
- Fluency in English language required.
