Fellowships support doctoral students in the applied physical, biological, and engineering sciences, including applied mathematics, statistics, and quantitative aspects of modern biology (see eligibility fields at participating universities). With only 10-12 awardees each year, the Hertz is perhaps the most prestigious of all fellowships offered for graduate study in the US. Through a rigorous application and interview process, the Hertz Foundation seeks to identify young scientists and engineers with the potential to change the world for the better.
Eligibility:
Applicants must:
- Be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
- Be college seniors, first-year graduate students, or in a gap year preparing to apply to graduate school.
- Intend to pursue a PhD in the applied physical and biological sciences, mathematics, or engineering.
- Intend to direct their studies toward understanding and solving major, near-term problems facing society.
- Be willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency.
Award amount: Fellows have the choice of two options:
Option 1: Five-Year Hertz
- $38,000 stipend for nine months.*
- Full tuition.
- Renewable for up to 5 years.
Option 2: Five-Year Coordinated
- Hertz Period: Two Years:
- $44,000 stipend for nine months.*
- Full tuition.
- Other Fellowship Period: Up to Three Years:
- $9,000/year supplemental stipend from Hertz.*
- Requires Awardee to accept a 3-year Fellowship from another source.
* $5,000 additional per year for dependent childcare.
