ASPIRE Internship Opportunity:

American Heart Association
Health Strategies: Small Market/ Rural Health Intern

Nashville, TN (remote)

The American Heart Association (AHA) was founded in 1924 and has grown into the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke. A shared focus on cardiovascular health unites our more than 33 million volunteers and supporters as well as our more than 3,400 employees. Our size and scope let us have real impact. We have invested more than $4.1 billion in research, more than any U.S. nonprofit organization.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer worldwide, and stroke ranks second globally. Even when those conditions don’t result in death, they cause disability and diminish quality of life. We want to see a world free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.  The AHA is working to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent, and reduce deaths from cardiovascular diseases and stroke by 20 percent, by the year 2020.

The Small Market/Rural Health Intern will be supervised by American Heart Association’s Vice President, Small Market and Rural Health and will assist in driving AHA’s health strategies initiatives throughout eight Southeastern states. These initiatives focus strongly on how to drive impact and change toward the AHA’s four focus areas of Women’s health, nutrition security, tobacco and vaping and high blood pressure. The AHA teams working on these issues include Communications, Advocacy, Foundations and Community Impact. The Rural Health Intern will work with various staff on these teams as we research, design, and implement specific programs that impact the community that we serve.

The Rural Market Intern will learn:

  • Data collection and presentation for community health assessment
  • Power Point presentation development to tell a health story
  • Digital opportunities to connect with communities and peers for meetings, webinars, and community dialogues
  • Understand the role of process improvement to drive better patient outcomes in a hospital and primary care setting
  • Help lead implementation, in conjunction with local AHA staff for Workplace Health Solutions, Target:BP, Check Change Control Cholesterol and local Community projects.
  • Foundation grant funding process and collecting the data and partners needed to apply
  • Drive key special projects and support innovative strategies with partners to solve community problems and create a culture of health
  • Serve as mission lead, representing and supporting AHA’s role as a collaborative community partner to create community change
  • Internal and External partner development and cultivation
  • Serve as a liaison for the AHA staff in building positive strategic relationships with key decision makers in the markets to support health strategies and overall community goals.
