The Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics Branch (CMTB) of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is recruiting a postdoctoral fellow with training in molecular genetics to study genetic risk factors for hematologic malignancy development following curative therapies for sickle cell disease (SCD), under the mentorship of Dr. Courtney Fitzhugh.

 

The Laboratory of Early Sickle Mortality Prevention is investigating the incidence and evolution of clonal hematopoiesis following non-myeloablative hematopoietic cell transplantation and myeloablative gene therapy for SCD. We also seek to elucidate the heterogeneity and landscape of driver mutations that may result in leukemic transformation in patients with clonal hematopoiesis. The project will involve the following:

  • Ultradeep error-corrected next-generation sequencing.
  • Single-cell analyses.
  • The development of a xenograft model.

The mission of the Cellular and Molecular Therapeutics Branch (CMTB) is to explore multiple cellular and molecular strategies to develop treatments for human diseases ranging from anemia to cancer. The Laboratory of Early Sickle Mortality Prevention is investigating a novel curative approach for SCD involving haploidentical HCT and the long-term health effects of curative therapies for SCD. The program also seeks to understand why there is an increased incidence of hematologic malignancies in adults with SCD following non-myeloablative hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), which results in graft failure and myeloablative gene therapy.

 

Qualifications: Candidates must possess a doctoral degree in molecular genetics or a related field. Candidates should have a strong background and skill in next-generation sequencing, single-cell sequencing, and/or bioinformatics. Background knowledge and research experience related to the development of murine models is a plus.
