Public Affairs Associate Position Summary

Are you passionate about driving science policy and advocacy? The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) is looking for a dynamic Public Affairs Associate. In this role, you’ll assist in the development and execution of ASBMB public affairs programs, manage committee operations, and work closely with the ASBMB public affairs team to develop, communicate, and implement public policy positions and outreach activities. Note: Candidates outside of the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia areas will not be considered.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advance Public Affairs Objectives: Track legislative issues, draft correspondence and policy documents, assist in formulating recommendations, help execute public outreach programs, and coordinate ASBMB Hill Day advocacy visits.
  • Communicate ASBMB Positions: Write content for policy blogs and member magazines, arrange and prepare meetings for ASBMB leadership, and attend coalition meetings.
  • Support Committees: Maintain committee databases, build interactive forms, and prepare materials for meetings.
  • Organize Events and Programs: Plan and execute webinars, assist with the Advocacy Training Program, and support advocacy-related events at ASBMB’s annual meeting.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social science, political science, biomedical sciences, or a related field.
  • 1-2 years of work experience, including internships or graduate school.
  • Interest in public engagement, policy, and science communication.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and stay organized.
  • Strong MS Office skills (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
