| Understanding the media: A starter guide for scientists
TUESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2 P.M. ET (1pm Central) This free, virtual, one-hour course—designed specifically for media-curious scientists with little or no media experience—teaches the basics scientists need to know as they consider dipping their toes or diving deeper into media engagement. We provide an overview of the U.S. news landscape, including the different types of media outlets and reporters a scientist might encounter (and what each is looking for), professional similarities and differences between journalists and scientists, and the risks and benefits of participating in interviews. You can register here.
Engaging the media: Essential skills for successful interviews THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2 P.M. ET (1pm Central) Scientists are often wary of speaking with the media because of concerns about being misquoted, misunderstood, or otherwise contributing to misinformation. And while expert sources don’t control the final outcome of a news story, there are strategies to maximize the chances that any story they help with contains accurate scientific information and context. In 45-minutes of presentation and 15-minutes of Q&A, this webinar will guide you through working with the media when public discourse may feel hostile toward science. Note: If you’ve previously attended SciLine’s Understanding the Media training, there is some overlap in material between the two sessions, but this session focuses more on specific interview skills and techniques. You can register here. |
