ASPIRE Internship Opportunity:

AIMBE Data Analysis and Science Communication Intern (Remote)

February 2026-May 2026

1400 I St NW, Ste #235

Washington, DC 20005

About The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE):

AIMBE is a nonprofit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., representing the most accomplished individuals in the fields of medical and biological engineering. No other organization  brings together academia, industry, government, and scientific societies to form a highly influential community advancing medical and biological engineering. AIMBE’s mission is to provide leadership and advocacy in medical and biological engineering for the benefit of society.

Internship Overview:

AIMBE is seeking a remote intern who will contribute to our organization’s mission of leveraging evidence-based findings to influence science policies that shape the biomedical research ecosystem. This position provides valuable experience in data analysis, science communication, and project management, along with opportunities to engage directly with leading biomedical scientists in academia, industry, and government.

The intern will work closely with the AIMBE senior staff, including the Executive Director, Assistant Director, and Director of Outreach and Engagement. As part of a small nonprofit team, the intern will be involved in activities spanning initial planning and strategic decision-making through communication and stakeholder engagement, offering a comprehensive view of how their work impacts the science policy landscape. While the intern will receive regular guidance and mentorship, they are expected to manage assigned projects independently and take ownership of deliverables.

The primary project of this internship focuses on analyzing data from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) RePORT Expenditures and Results (RePORTER) module, a repository of NIH-funded research projects and associated publications and patents resulting from NIH funding, to make conclusions about the state of federal funding for medical and biological engineering research. The final products of this work will be featured on the AIMBE website.

Additionally, the intern may also support AIMBE’s public engagement initiatives. This includes assisting with the organization and logistics of AIMBE’s workshops held both virtually and in person. The intern may help with analyzing survey data collected from attendees of these training sessions (e.g., advocacy and science communication workshops) and assessing impact metrics in support of program evaluation and future offerings.

Responsibilities May Include:

  • Analyzing large datasets of NIH research funding data accessed through NIH RePORTER
  • Developing educational materials (e.g., one-pagers and graphics informed by NIH RePORTER data) to support the advocacy of federal funding for medical and biological engineering research
  • Drafting and analyzing post-event surveys (e.g., via Google Forms) for public engagement workshops administered by AIMBE
  • Preparing and delivering presentations on analyzed data to AIMBE staff
  • Attending required weekly check-in meetings with an AIMBE internship supervisor; participating in AIMBE staff meetings as availability permits
  • Additional tasks and projects may be provided based on mutual needs and interest

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Must be a current Vanderbilt University graduate student or postdoctoral fellow in the biomedical sciences or a related field (biomedical engineering background not required)
  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage time and tasks in a remote work environment; an ideal candidate is highly independent and a motivated self-starter
  • Experience analyzing large datasets is preferred, including the ability to clean, organize, and interpret research funding data to identify trends and patterns
  • Experience creating clear, effective data visualizations to communicate quantitative findings to both scientific and non-scientific audiences
  • Interest in graphic design is a plus, but not required
  • Familiarity with NIH grant mechanisms and federal research funding data is preferred but not required, as training and guidance will be provided by AIMBE
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.) and remote collaboration tools (e.g., Zoom) is required

Internship Details:

  • Start date is flexible with an anticipated duration of February 2026 through May 2026 (approximately 12 weeks), with the possibility of extension upon review and needs of the organization
  • Internship is remote, unpaid, and part-time (8-10 hours per week)
  • Negotiable stipend may be available based on the intern’s qualifications and experience
  • As part of the internship, the intern is required to attend the in-person 2026 AIMBE Annual Event (April 10-13, 2026; Washingon, D.C.). The intern is strongly encouraged to apply for support through the ASPIRE Travel Scholarship Program; however, all travel, lodging, and meal costs to attend the meeting will be covered by AIMBE if necessary
  • The intern will communicate with AIMBE primarily through Zoom meetings and email
