AIR’s Health Policy Research (HPR) group specializes in research, evaluation, policy analysis, measurement, performance management, and technical assistance in the areas of health services organization, quality of care, quality of life, consumer engagement, and financing and cost of care. HPR’s major clients include the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), private foundations, and state governments.

The Researcher will serve as a resource on projects related to consumer and stakeholder engagement, quality reporting and measurement, and healthcare reform. Specifically, the Researcher will: a) lead and contribute to analysis of research findings and technical reports; b) demonstrate and apply content knowledge to study design decisions, project activities, and reporting; c) contribute to qualitative or quantitative data collection; d) support collaboration among team members, both internal and external to organization; and e) carry out project management activities, including monitoring contract timelines, reporting, and communicating with clients as appropriate. This position can be located in Washington, DC, Silver Spring, MD, Chapel Hill, NC, or San Mateo, CA.

Responsibilities:
1. Provide research support on HPR projects, including literature searches, data collection (from focus groups, interviews, surveys, secondary/archival sources), analysis of qualitative data, descriptive analysis of quantitative data, and technical report preparation.
2. Provide managerial support on HPR projects and tasks including managing project budgets and schedules, coordinating project-related meeting and travel arrangements and interacting with clients.
3. Provide technical leadership of research or technical assistance projects, including developing research designs and strategic audience-focused project plans, providing strategic thinking, leading and supporting stakeholder work, conducting analyses of qualitative or quantitative data, and identifying creative solutions to address client needs.
4. Contribute to dissemination activities, including presentations, conference posters, issue briefs, technical reports, and manuscripts for a variety of audiences.
5. Engage in business development activities, including, cultivating relationships with existing and potential new clients, managing or writing proposals, developing budgets, and expanding AIR Health’s areas of expertise.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree with 0-3 years related experience or M.A., M.S., or M.P.H. or equivalent degree with 3-5 years related experience in health services research (health policy, management, health behavior, health care), social science (psychology, sociology), evaluation research, or public health required.
  • Substantial technical expertise in qualitative research methods, with experience using analytic software (e.g., NVivo).
  • In addition to technical expertise, candidates should have demonstrated management skills, including the ability to lead small and medium sized tasks and proposals, work on teams under the leadership of other staff, provide day-to-day management of complex projects and tasks, and direct and mentor staff members.
  • Experience working in a grant or contract-funded environment highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills.
  • Flexibility and ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Acute attention to detail and strong work ethic.
