Job Posting: Government Affairs & Advocacy Specialist, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is a nationwide network of people dedicated to working together to advance research, support patients and create hope for those affected by pancreatic cancer.  As a national not-for-profit organization for the pancreatic cancer community, we are looking for a bright, ambitious and team-oriented individual who is comfortable in a growth-oriented and fast-paced organization to fill the role of Government Affairs & Advocacy Specialist in our Washington, DC office.

This position is an important member of our small Government Affairs & Advocacy Team and will have responsibility for tasks associated with managing our nationwide grassroots network and providing general administrative assistance to the team and vice-president.  Key duties include managing Advocacy Leaders who are serving in Level Four Affiliates or as Community Advocates, so top-notch customer service skills are critical.  Other duties include monitoring and responding to general inquiry calls and emails; creating action alerts; managing grassroots who are working on securing proclamations for the annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month; and logistical planning and implementation for our annual advocacy conference in June, which attracts approximately 500 constituents from across the country.

In addition, the Government Affairs & Advocacy Specialist will assist with monitoring and tracking Congressional activity on our priority issues and developing materials that are used in the organization’s advocacy activities.  This position will also have a role in training our Advocacy Leaders mentioned above and will work with the vice-president and Marketing & Communications Department to create and manage messaging for advocacy-related social networking platforms. Daily activities include volunteer management, writing, and administrative functions that support the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s public policy priorities.

Successful candidates will have a 4-year college degree or equivalent experience plus two years’ experience working with volunteers or customers.  Experience on the Hill and/or with a non-profit patient advocacy organization is a plus.  Excellent oral and written communication skills are required as well as is strong attention to detail and solid time management skills.  Must demonstrate ability to communicate with volunteers, pancreatic cancer survivors, employees and other agency contacts in a courteous and professional manner.  Additional requirements include familiarity with the basic legislative process, and working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (e.g. Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and popular social media platforms (e.g. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn).
