After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, the American College of Surgeons (ACS) formed a working group with the goal of reducing mortality in mass casualty situations. To do this, they created the "Stop the Bleed" course focused on training lay-responders in basic hemorrhage control techniques (tourniquets and pressure dressings) in order to empower bystanders to intervene and perform life-saving treatment even before EMTs arrive on scene. Here at Vanderbilt, the Vanderbilt Trauma Team and the General Surgery Interest Group are working together to ensure that all VU medical students have the opportunity to participate in "Stop the Bleed." We hope that this will increase both the awareness and preparedness of our student body and we look forward to seeing you in class!
