Research Scientist in Medical Informatics
Kaiser Permanente Northern California, Oakland, CA

Position Description:
The Division of Research (DOR) of The Permanente Medical Group, Inc. (Kaiser Permanente Northern California, KPNC) seeks to recruit an expert in medical informatics with research experience to (1) help lead the development and implementation of the DOR’s strategic agenda for informatics, and (2) act as the principal informatics liaison for the DOR to both internal and external leaders, committees and organizations. The informatics liaison role will include establishing and facilitating collaborations both within KPNC (e.g. with leaders responsible for the electronic health record, patient portal, and other operational health IT tools) and external to KPNC (e.g., NIH, NSF, AHRQ). We are seeking candidates at the early mid-career level. This individual will be expected to combine leadership and liaison activities (supported by core internal funding) with an active medical informatics research program supported by external funding and leading to publications in the peer-reviewed literature.

The KPNC Division of Research draws upon the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Region’s rich clinical databases, advanced informatics infrastructure, and direct access to a diverse population of 3.4 million members. DOR investigators are primarily supported by grant and contract funding from Federal and other external sources. The DOR’s main strategic goal in the area of informatics is to enhance the division’s health IT research capability. This will be accomplished by optimizing communication with KPNC health IT leaders and with external funding and policy making agencies. Consequently, the division seeks to hire an individual with a strategic vision for clinical and implementation research that incorporates new information technologies and methods.

We are specifically interested in candidates who are working in areas that combine scholarly research with health care system operations. Such areas could include direct patient care (e.g., research on electronic health record innovations, incorporation of genomics data for personalized medicine, use of patient-driven care portals), data mining for identification of quality improvement opportunities, and/or developing robust electronic platforms for research collaboration or translation. The candidate is expected to have a track record of external research funding, relevant work experience in clinical informatics, and success working in complex organizational environments. The successful candidate is expected to serve as a resource for all DOR investigators who are interested in incorporating health informatics tools into their research. Superb interpersonal skills are essential, as this individual will represent the DOR research community in multiple KPNC operational settings.

Minimum requirements for the position include an MD or PhD degree with appropriate experience in some substantive area of clinical informatics as well as some other area relevant to DOR activities (e.g., health services research, basic or clinical epidemiology, management science). Opportunities to maintain clinical skills are available to clinicians.
