Staff Scientist, Toxicologist, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking a dynamic, highly motivated scientist with specific expertise in Neurotoxicology to serve as a Staff Scientist in the Toxicology Branch of the National Toxicology Program (NTP). The NTP provides toxicological evaluations on substances of public health concern. The program develops and validates improved toxicology methods (more sensitive, specific and rapid); develops approaches and generates data to strengthen the science base for risk assessments; and communicates results with all stakeholders. Program goals are achieved through a highly integrated, cooperative research and testing program carried out through research and development contracts and other support activities. The NTP has decided to increase its capacity to investigate the potential for environmental agents to alter the structure and/or function of the nervous system, including assessment of the impact on a variety of behavioral measures. In addition studies will be aimed at investigating the potential for such agents to induce latent effects during critical developmental periods that may have more severe consequences in later life (“fetal basis of adult disease”) or that may be passed on to succeeding generations.
The selected individual will have significant prior knowledge and experience in the implementation, design, conduct and interpretation of the complex regulatory protocols used to assess effects on the nervous system. The scientist must also have a background in the investigation of adverse outcomes following exposure to neurotoxicants in live animal studies, beyond those normally required by Federal regulatory and international agencies. Preference will be given to candidates with training and experience in the techniques for conducting behavioral assessments in experimental animals.
The incumbent will serve as a resource for expertise on the neurotoxicity of specific environmental agents and prepare and defend NTP reports and research papers on the results to the NTP Board of Scientific Counselors. Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. or equivalent degree with at least 2 years post-doctoral experience in the design, conduct and interpretation of neurotoxicology studies and the ability to work in a team environment. Appointees may be U.S. citizens, resident aliens, or non-resident aliens with, or eligible to obtain, a valid employment authorization document (EAD).
The initial appoint will be from 1 to 5 years with renewals possible based upon performance, programmatic need and funding. Salary range is $84,317 to $123,615, commensurate with qualifications.
