The Scientific Careers Research and Development Group at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, is seeking an early career life scientist to join our team of natural and social scientists as we develop, deploy and study a novel coaching approach to promoting the development of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

The Academy for Future Science Faculty  coaching model was initiated in 2011 as a randomized controlled trial through an NIH Director’s Pathfinder Award to Promote Diversity in the Scientific Workforce. This position will work with the PI of the study and several social scientists to facilitate the ongoing activities of students and Coaches within the Academy, and continuing studying how it impacts participants and controls. This position will be responsible for managing all of the operations of the Academy as well as participating in collection and analysis of both qualitative (interview) and quantitative (survey and professional progress) data. The position is ideally suited to a recent PhD life scientist who would like to become skilled at developing and managing projects, and evaluating and studying interventions designed to promote research careers. The Academy has been designed from fundamental social science theories and models which the person in this position will learn. Through the Academy, we are also studying the Coaches (successful senior biomedical scientists) and the coaching model in addition to the student participants.

The position is funded by a grant from NIGMS through August 31, 2017. It is a full-time, Research Associate position with regular benefits afforded to all employees of Northwestern University. Minimum requirement is a MS in a life science discipline; a PhD is preferred. Evidence of prior and current interest, and activities, associated with diversity initiatives, outreach or other career exploration efforts would be a plus. Excellent data and project management skills required. No prior experience with qualitative research methods is required. Interested applicants should submit a cover letter indicating the basis of their interest in the position and prior experiences that have prepared them for it via email to:
