Job Opportunity: Director of Policy and Advocacy, SfN
The Society for Neuroscience (SfN) is the world’s largest organization of scientists and physicians devoted to understanding the brain and nervous system. The nonprofit organization, founded in 1969, now has nearly 40,000 members in more than 90 countries and 130 chapters worldwide.
SfN is seeking a demonstrated leader to become the Director of Policy and Advocacy. Working closely with volunteer leadership and senior staff the Director is responsible for implementing and overseeing SfN activities to advance neuroscience research in the U.S. and internationally. The Director will work to: 1) promote and increase U.S. federal funding for science, with a particular focus on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Science Foundation (NSF); 2) serve as the lead staff liaison to the Government and Public Affairs Committee and the Committee on Animals in Research; and 3) collaborate with other domestic and international organizations to enhance coordination on advocacy agendas and activities. The Director will be responsible for the management of their department, including but not limited to, goal setting, budgeting, and financial and personnel management. In addition, the Director will be responsible for the management of three (3) direct reports and must have a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience. This position is ideal for someone who is ready to take the next step in their career and who has worked within a membership association and has a strong understanding of biomedical research issues, organizational governance, and personnel management.
Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree, at least seven years of relatable experience in a professional environment. Experience working in a non-profit, association or professional society in advocacy is preferred. The Director must be a strategic thinker with effective leadership ability and strong organizational and project management skills. In addition, they will need to have proven ability to communicate, demonstrate knowledge of advocacy communication approaches; have diplomatic interpersonal skills when working with diverse interests and sensitive issues; ability to multitask; and exhibit the ability to interact easily and effectively with Members of Congress, Congressional staff, SfN coalition stakeholders, and SfN member volunteer leaders.
