Henrietta H. Fore Women in Science Fellowship
Fellowship Goal: To improve international scientific cooperation between women scientists
The CRDF Global Henrietta H. Fore Women in Science Fellowship will be awarded for the first time in 2014. The first fellow will focus on expanding opportunities for women scientists around the world to collaborate in science and engineering. Specifically, the fellow will conduct research on opportunities and impediments to international collaboration involving women scientists; advise CRDF Global on ways to strengthen existing program opportunities; and/or recommend possible new programs.
The Challenge
The problem of underrepresentation of women in science and engineering globally is well documented. Efforts are underway to encourage more women to pursue science and engineering careers and to provide sustainable career paths and advancement opportunities. For many scientists, international collaboration is an essential part of a successful career in that it provides opportunities to learn new approaches, access world-class facilities or unique research sites, and develop global networks. Yet, women lack sufficient opportunities to collaborate internationally to advance their careers. When opportunities arise, women often face special challenges related to culture, language, and travel that make it difficult for them to collaborate internationally.
CRDF Global is committed to promoting women in science and engineering. Many of CRDF Global’s international programs, including the Cooperative Research Grants, the Robin Copeland Memorial Fellowship, the Iraq Science Fellowship Program, and our Professional Skills Development Program, have included women, but there is more we can do.
The CRDF Global Henrietta H. Fore Women in Science Fellowship
The inaugural fellowship will be awarded in 2014 to a competitively selected female scientist. During her 8-12 week fellowship at CRDF Global, she will research the specific needs and opportunities of women scientists’ interest in international cooperation, including conducting interviews with women who have participated in CRDF Global’s past programs. She will advise CRDF Global program staff on ways to enhance the participation of women in existing programs, and she will recommend new programs that CRDF Global may launch to expand international collaboration opportunities for women scientists. These may include additional fellowships, research, training or other opportunities that CRDF Global would explore in subsequent years of the fellowship.
Financial support for the fellowship will include a stipend.
Eligibility Requirements
- Candidates must be women with or pursuing a PhD in the natural sciences, mathematics, engineering, or biomedical and behavioral sciences.
- Candidates must demonstrate experience or expertise in international collaboration.
- Applicants must be willing to be located at CRDF Global headquarters in Arlington, VA for the duration of the fellowship (8-12 weeks).
- Applicants must have U.S. work authorization.
Application Process
Interested candidates should submit a CV with cover letter, two letters of reference. The cover letter should outline your experience promoting international collaboration for women and suggest specific topics for research during the fellowship.
The deadline for application is April 25, 2014. The fellow will be selected by May 9, 2014. All applicants will be notified by no later than May 16.

About Henrietta H. Fore
Ms. Henrietta Holsman Fore is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Holsman International, an investment and management company. From 2007 to 2009, Ms. Fore served as the Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and as the Director of U.S. foreign assistance, holding the equivalent rank as Deputy Secretary of State. She was the first woman to serve in these roles.
