How do I tell my PI?

Posted by on Monday, April 21, 2014 in Path to Career Resources .

Grad students and postdocs are often apprehensive about talking to their faculty adviser about their career interests, especially if their interests lie outside the “traditional” career path of becoming a tenure-track professor at a university.

But did you know that only ~15% of biomedical sciences PhDs go on to become tenure-track professors? That’s right… 85% of biomedical sciences PhDs ultimately pursue a non-tenure-track faculty career!

This data point is compelling, but there is more to the discussion than knowing the stats. In this recent article for The Chronicle of Higher Education, Maren Wood addresses the topic of, “How to Tell Your Adviser” about your nonfaculty career aspirations.
