Purpose:
The School of Biology and Ecology seeks applicants for a two year fixed-length, fiscal year Lecturer position with an August start date. This position will have responsibilities for 50% biological education research and 50% teaching.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
One of the primary research responsibilities of this position is to contribute to research on faculty professional development. The research will specifically focus on how faculty at several institutions incorporate short answer questions into their large-lecture biology courses and use the information to guide instruction. This work will be conducted as part of a multi-institution, interdisciplinary effort to explore faculty adoption and use of assessments developed for the Automated Analysis of Constructed Response (AACR) project (www.msu.edu/~aacr), which is supported by the National Science Foundation’s Transforming Undergraduate Education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (TUES) and Widening Implementation and Demonstration of Evidence-Based Reforms (WIDER) programs.

The employee is expected to carry out all aspects of the research in collaboration with the supervisor and technical staff working on this project, including designing experiments and performing data analysis. In addition, the individual is expected to contribute to the writing of scientific reports and lay articles. Specific projects and responsibilities may change with subsequent funding opportunities.

The teaching component of this position includes leading inquiry-based laboratory experiences for first-year undergraduate students, developing and delivering recitation activities for physiology courses, and teaching portions of the majors and non-majors introductory biology courses.

Knowledge, Skills & Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in biology, molecular biology, physiology, biology education, or a closely related field is required by date of hire. The applicant must have a demonstrated interest in discipline-based education research. Preference will be given to applicants who have a record of successful work in their biology field; skills in analyzing the effectiveness of classroom activities; demonstrated excellence in teaching; and have evidence of collaborating well as part of a team.

Appropriate background checks are required.

All UMS employees are required to comply with applicable policies and procedures, as well as to complete applicable workplace related screenings, and required employee trainings, such as Information Security, Safety Training, Workplace Violence and Sexual Harassment.

To Apply:
Materials must be submitted via “Apply For Position.” You will need to create a profile and application; upload a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a two page summary of research accomplishments, a two page statement of teaching philosophy, copies of 1-3 representative publications, and undergraduate and graduate transcripts; and provide contact information for three professional references. Additionally, candidates will need to arrange to have a minimum of three letters of reference submitted to michelle.k.smith@maine.edu. Application review will start on May 14th and continue until a suitable pool of applicants is found.

The University of Maine is an EEO/AA employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
