Job Description: 
The Program Director of the Diversity Initiative will direct programs focused on increasing the participation of underrepresented minorities in cutting edge genomic science. The Diversity Initiative consists of programs for high school students, undergraduates, postdoctoral fellows, and visiting faculty. The programs are funded primarily by a grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute. As part of managing these programs, the program director will also interact with colleagues locally and nationally through conferences, campus visits and recruiting events to ensure Broad is employing best practices in training students and mentors. The Program Director will hire, train and supervise the staff necessary to carry out the programs, implement an evaluation plan for the programs, prepare applications for funding and provide reports for funding agencies. The Program Director will also be responsible for the Diversity Initiative’s collaboration with other groups at the Broad around programs that support the career and educational aspirations of the wider Broad community.

Requirements:

  • Required: Master’s degree
  • Preferred: PhD in science or education
  • 3 to 5 years of related experience in program development, recruiting, or education required
  • Experience in diversity and outreach programs preferred.
  • Flexibility to work some weeknights and weekends.
  • Required to travel domestically and internationally. Travel ranges from 10-15%.

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions:

  • Manage program budgets.
  • Develop creative recruitment strategies, including the design and preparation of materials, identification of candidate sourcing sites, recruiting candidates, and matching candidates with mentors.
  • Oversee the Summer Research Program in Genomics for undergraduate students, including jointly developing and delivering the curriculum that helps participants develop the tools needed to understand and achieve successful careers in scientific research.
  • Advise on the Broad’s participation in the MITES program, providing scientific guidance in Broad’s sponsorship of the genomics lab research project and lecture series. Participates in developing program curriculum and hires and oversees Genome MITES instructor, recruits teaching assistants.
  • Establish programmatic support for postdoctoral fellows and visiting faculty and helps evaluate opportunities to create new programs that are consistent with the missions of the DI and the Broad.
  •  Plan events to help minority students in the Boston area learn more about genomic and biomedical research.
  • Establish mechanisms for conducting programmatic needs assessments and to analyze effectiveness of all aspects of the diversity programs. Revise program goals, objectives and strategies and launch new initiatives based on these data.
  • Establish and periodically revise strategic plan, monitor and report progress
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key individuals, organizations, and institutions.
  • Create effective strategies for maintaining relationships with students and scientists after they leave the Broad.
  • Develop and carry out mentor training for Diversity Initiative and other programs based on best practices
  • Represent the Broad at scientific and educational meetings, conferences and career fairs for recruitment and to promote Broad programs
  • Prepare written reports and oral presentations for funding agencies about the progress of the Broad’s diversity programs. Help write grant applications and other proposals for outside funding.
  • Supervise the Diversity Program Coordinator and other staff.
  • Hire and manage consultants and temporary staff to help with the diversity programs.
