Position: The Department of Teaching and Learning at Washington State University invites applications for a permanent, full-time tenure-track science education faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level for the new WSU Spokane Health Science STEM Education Research (HS-STEM-ER) Center currently in development. The mission of the WSU Spokane HS-STEM-ER Center is to guide continued and expanded excellence in health science STEM education The mission of the WSU Spokane HS-STEM-ER Center is to guide continued and expanded excellence in health science STEM education research, teaching, and learning at WSU, the state, and beyond by supporting health science STEM education research and related outreach programs and professional activity. We seek creative and collaborative scholars with established scholarly records to help define and carry out the Center research agenda and related outreach and professional development efforts, as well as contributing to a growing Mathematics and Science Education graduate and undergraduate program. Based on scholarly record, this faculty member will be considered for a Boeing Science Education Professorship.. Responsibilities: Conduct scholarly research on science education and/or STEM pipeline-related topics; solicit external funding to support the research, outreach, and professional development goals of the HS-STEM-ER Center; teach graduate and undergraduate courses in science and STEM education and mentor graduate students in science and mathematics education; participate in an interdisciplinary statewide WSU team committed to effective graduate and undergraduate teacher education through teaching, mentoring, and service; contribute to the HS-STEM-ER Center’s collaborative planning and efforts; develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with professionals in K-12 schools, regional universities, and community agencies; and initiate and participate in STEM, health science, and/or science education at the local, state, and national levels. Required Qualifications: Earned doctorate in a science education-related field; established record of scholarship including publications in widely recognized journals with a focus on important and timely issues in STEM and/or science education; demonstrated record of obtaining or potential to obtain external funding; demonstrated understanding of connections between the Next Generation Science Standards and STEM including the integrated nature of STEM education; strong collaboration skills; and knowledge of effective pedagogy. Desired Qualifications: Practical knowledge of K-12 teaching or learning; demonstrated record of teaching and mentoring college students; demonstrated record of initiating and leading collaborations including but not limited to any of the following groups: K-12 schools, community college systems, university peers, community agencies; demonstrated record in interdisciplinary STEM collaboration; familiarity with the STEM education research literature, particularly at the K-12 level, and ability to connect it to the pursuit of health science careers; and demonstrated record of cultural competence in research, teaching, and service. To qualify at the associate professor level, applicants must have a demonstrated and consistent record of publications in nationally and internationally recognized journals over at least 5 years, obtaining external funding, and initiating and leading collaborative work with K-12 and higher education partners.Applications: Screening will begin on December 1, 2014 and continue until the position is filled.
