Job Posting: Assistant Professor, Tenure Track, Future Thinking and Sustainability, Arizona State University
Tenure-track Faculty Position in Future Thinking and Sustainability
The School of Sustainability at Arizona State University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position, at the assistant professor level, in Sustainability Science with a focus on quantitatively integrating conceptualizations of the future into present decisions and actions. A fundamental principle of sustainability is that our present actions should not undermine the ability of future generations to achieve their own goals and aspirations. To do so requires an ability to conceptualize, anticipate, and model plausible futures in a context of deep uncertainty about the dynamics of the Earth system and social processes, and devise strategies to move towards the future we want.
Required qualifications: We seek an individual with expertise in future thinking as it applies to present-day decisions, especially from a strong quantitative perspective, who could teach our students fundamental skills in quantitative model development and analysis, scenario building, appropriate statistical methods and/or other techniques. Successful candidates must have an earned doctorate at the time of appointment. Additional search criteria include: 1) a strong record of scholarly achievement and publications; 2) experience with university-level teaching, mentoring, and other educational activities; 3) experience with, or a strong interest in, working on interdisciplinary teams; 4) strong communication skills, and; 5) evidence of potential to secure research funding. Applicants should be prepared to develop a cutting-edge research program in sustainability. The position also will include teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses, collaborating with interdisciplinary sustainability research teams within the school and across campus, and performing school, university, professional, and community service. Desired qualifications: Subject expertise should align with grand sustainability challenges (e.g., climate change, biodiversity loss, rapid urbanization) and the GIOS strategic focus areas. This will complement expertise on future thinking in the School and other institutes at ASU (e.g., Center for Science and Policy and Outcomes, Center for Science and the Imagination, Center for the Study of Institutional Diversity). Expertise and hands-on experience with actual decision-making processes and demonstrable participation in sustainability policy or political arenas is desirable. Post-doctoral research experience is preferable.
