The Division of Physical Sciences (PSD) in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) invites applications for one instructor position in scientific writing and communication at the rank of lecturer or senior lecturer. The successful candidate will join our faculty on a full-time basis for a multi-year, renewable contract on a nine-month academic year appointment beginning September 16, 2015. Although this position is based in the Physical Sciences Division, the candidate will be expected to work and teach across the STEM disciplines. All university faculty engage in teaching, research and service.
Duties and Responsibilities
A commitment to excellence in teaching, and supporting the university through service, are essential. Instructional responsibilities include teaching lower division, upper division, and possibly some graduate courses in scientific writing and communication in STEM disciplines; some of which will include students from all of the STEM disciplines in the same class. Other courses may be assigned based on the candidate's qualifications and interests. A successful candidate will develop scientific writing and communication courses for the STEM curriculum, and assist STEM faculty with integrating meaningful and purposeful writing into their courses. Service includes departmental, school, and university committee work, consulting with university scientists and engineers, and participation in professional organizations both locally and nationally.
Required Qualifications
- A Doctorate or Master's degree (or foreign equivalent) in a STEM-related field with a minimum of 3 years of experience in writing with a strong, demonstrated focus in scientific writing and communication; or a Doctorate or Master's degree (or foreign equivalent) in a writing-related field with a minimum of 4 years of experience in STEM-based writing.
- Demonstration of excellence in teaching as described in the Duties and Responsibilities section above.
- Demonstration of ability and commitment to support and enhance learning for diverse populations.
- Experience mentoring undergraduate students in STEM-related writing.
- Experience in curriculum development of undergraduate scientific writing and communication courses in STEM disciplines.
The School of STEM offers ten undergraduate degrees and two graduate degrees within its four Divisions of Biological Sciences, Computing and Software Systems, Engineering and Mathematics, and Physical Sciences. Our undergraduate degrees in Chemistry, Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering began in Autumn 2014. We also offer master's degrees in Computer Science and Software Engineering and Cyber Security Engineering, and we plan to offer a master's degree in Electrical Engineering beginning Winter 2015. Our 74,000 square-foot Discovery Hall teaching and laboratory facility, which includes eleven new science and engineering laboratories, opened in Summer 2014. The Division of Physical Sciences includes faculty in Chemistry, Physics and Climate Science. The Chemistry major, which started in 2014, includes emphases on biochemistry and environmental chemistry. The Physics degree currently offers a minor and is developing a major anticipated to begin in the 2015-16 academic year.
