Advocacy Ambassador & Congressional Team Member

Would you like to assist the Alzheimer’s Association in building a relationship with Congressman Jim Cooper and his staff throughout the year, as well as educating them on the foundation’s federal priorities? 

The Mid-South Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is head-quartered in Nashville, TN and has Advocacy Ambassadors assigned to our Tennessee Legislators.  Dr. Eric Hustedt, Professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at Vanderbilt University, is currently serving as the ambassador to Congressman Jim Cooper and is seeking to grow his Alzheimer’s Congressional Team (ACT). Volunteers will have the opportunity to write briefing memos and letters to the editor at various news and media outlets, help with social media content development and dissemination, and visit Congressman Cooper to share talking points and priorities from the Alzheimer’s Association.

If you live in Congressman Cooper’s (5th) district and have an interest in supporting the Alzheimer’s Association through advocacy efforts, please consider participating in this opportunity.

Internship Details:

  • unpaid volunteer opportunity
  • Duration: up to one year: September 1, 2016 – August 31, 2017
  • Time Commitment: 2-5 hrs/week; variable and flexible
  • Qualifying students or postdocs may have the opportunity to apply for ASPIRE Travel Funds to attend the Annual Alzheimer's Association Advocacy Forum in Washington D.C., Spring 2017.
  • Applicants should reside in COngressman Coopers (5th) district (link to map)
  • Applicants should have some connection to dementia either through family or research; this should be explained in the letter of interest.

  • Submit a CV and Letter of Interest as pdfs with your name in the file name to Ashley Brady at ashley.brady@vanderbilt.edu
  • Set up an in-person meeting with Ashley Brady prior to the application deadline.

Your information will then be passed along to the host who may contact you directly to schedule an interview via phone.

ASPIRE Internship eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be a current Vanderbilt University PhD student or a current postdoctoral fellow.
  • All PhD students must have completed all coursework for their degree prior to September 2016.
  • Biomedical PhD students must also have passed their qualifying exams before the application deadline.
  • If you are not in a department supported by the BRET office, we will also require that you complete a form guaranteeing PI approval to participate in this program.  Please contact Ashley Brady at ashley.brady@vanderbilt.edu for more information.
  • If you are an international student or postdoctoral fellow, your visa status may affect your work eligibility. Please contact Ashley Brady to discuss this further.
