Presented by Abby Olena, PhD

Scientists have opinions that the world could benefit from hearing. This workshop will give you the tools to combine your experience and expertise with clear and compelling writing to craft an op-ed with the potential to influence readers and impact public policy. Please bring a laptop computer or pen and paper and be ready to write. This session is ideal for scientists interested in science advocacy or policy, science writing, philanthropy, or anyone who wants to hone their persuasive writing skills. Limited to 20 participants.

After earning her PhD in Biological Sciences from Vanderbilt, Abby was an American Association of Science Mass Media Fellow at the Chicago Tribune and the editorial intern for The Scientist. She then spent two years as a Science & Society Postdoctoral Fellow in Science Communication at Duke University, where she taught scientists how to communicate with diverse audiences, including policymakers, journalists, and the public. Now, she is a freelance science writer and leads communications trainings for scientists.
