Description

Vanderbilt University is seeking to fill a Research Development Program Manager reporting to the Vice Provost for Research. The Manager operates with a high degree of autonomy in the newly created Leveraged Proposal Organization and Development Program and produces, manages, and implements a suite of programs and services geared to increase the competitiveness of proposals for extramural funding and to develop a sustainable matrix of sponsorship from diverse sources. The Manager will focus on leveraging faculty strengths and internal grant funding programs to map to key sponsor priorities, while building relationships between sponsors and faculty. The successful candidate shall possess and will expand an extensive network of sponsor agency personnel and knowledge of strategic plans at key agencies. This position is posted as a staff appointment. However, candidates with the appropriate qualifications are eligible for consideration for a non-tenure track faculty appointment and we encourage such candidates to apply to this opening.
 
 
Key Functions and Expected Performances

  • Develop deep content knowledge of faculty/center research capability, and create communications (such as one-pagers) for distribution to sponsors for relationship building and shaping sponsor initiatives.
  • Produce and manage “capability maps” of VU expertise appropriate for large programs at sponsors.
  • Produce and manage “opportunity maps” of external programs, i.e., a directory of external opportunities that is appropriate for each major research lab/center at VU
  • Develop sponsor relationships to VU centers and projects, including visits to VU by program officers and visits by VU teams to sponsors.
  • Coordinate with the Office of Federal Relations to increase VU research presence in DC and with Corporate and Foundation Relations on relationships with foundations.
  • Develop and provide services including high-level conceptualization to match sponsor priorities, effective team organization, red-team review, credible administrative, management, education/outreach, and/or data sharing plans to assist investigators in the complex process of developing competitive proposals for prestigious opportunities at foundations e.g., Gates, Guggenheim, Keck, MacArthur, Mellon, Simons etc., and federal agency programs e.g., NSF STC, PIRE, DOE Hubs, USAID, MURI etc.
  • Support the Vice Provost for Research and the Vanderbilt University Research Council so faculty and leadership are prepared to seize opportunity and to shape emerging opportunities at national and international venues.
  • Manage the Federal and Foundations limited submissions process for Vanderbilt University in a cohered manner with the leveraged-proposal development program

Qualifications
Job requires Bachelor's and 3 years of experience or the equivalent.

Preferred Education, Skills, and Experiences:
 

  • Ph.D. preferred
  • Five years of expertise spanning sponsors and a top research university or an M.S. with 8-10 years of demonstrated experience.
  • Prior experience in developing center-scale proposals for federal agencies or foundations and in working with large cross-disciplinary faculty groups
  • Prior experience with federal, industry, or foundation grant writing.
  • Knowledgeable of budget preparation, matching processes, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Strong team building, analytical, technical writing, and communications skills.
  • Demonstrated competence in interdisciplinary environments, communications, or research administration and familiarity with inter-university and inter-institutional collaborations.
  • Some experience with international projects and/or programs desired.
  • Ability to assume lead role in project management.
  • Experience working with private and/or public sector executives and high-level academic officials preferred.
  • Ability to work simultaneously on multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment where priorities change in response to external needs and opportunities.
  • Discretion and the ability to work independently in situations requiring judgment and initiative.
