One of the greatest joys of working in the Office of Career Development is helping our graduate students and postdocs find meaningful careers after their time at Vanderbilt. We prepare them in a number of ways – through seminars, workshops, individual coaching and more – and it is exciting to see them engaged in career exploration and self-discovery.

Additionally, one of my favorite projects is the Beyond the Lab video series. We interview our alumni, ask them about their current job, how they got there, what they learned from their Vanderbilt experience, and to share their words of wisdom for current trainees. All videos are under 20min, professionally edited, and available on YouTube. Currently there are over 40 videos available (and always growing!) which highlight alumni representing diverse backgrounds, different professional roles, and a multitude of career pathways. One thing that resonates in each one? The interviewee is so proud of their time at Vanderbilt.

Some of my favorite interviews?

  • Tune in for Mary Kosinski’s interesting path of discovery– in her research, career, and development of her own skill set– which has taken her from technology transfer to the biopharma start-up world.
  • Watch as Tom Utley talks about his role within the Center for Technology Transfer and Commercialization at Vanderbilt and his quick words of wisdom for current graduate students and postdocs.
  • Listen to Cynthia Brame describe her passion for teaching and training the trainers because of her biomedical science foundation.
