Full-time Associate Position at The diaTribe Foundation in San Francisco

The diaTribe Foundation is a 501(c)3 certified nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the lives of people living with diabetes and prediabetes, and to advocate for action. The diaTribe Foundation is committed to helping people with diabetes live happier, healthier, and more hopeful lives through its many programs. These include diaTribe, a free online patient resource that reaches nearly two million annually, as well as numerous advocacy initiatives that seek to improve diabetes literacy in the media and bring the patient perspective to the FDA and other policy makers. The Foundation also hosts events throughout the year to convene the world’s brightest minds and develop innovative solutions to the type 2 diabetes epidemic – notably, the d-Series: Executive Innovation Lab on Diabetes and Obesity. Our rapidly-growing organization is located in the vibrant Lower Haight neighborhood of San Francisco and led by founder Kelly Close (Amherst ’90, Harvard Business School ’95).

The Full-Time Associate position at The diaTribe Foundation is ideal for someone with a significant science or pre-medical background who has additional interests in public health, health policy, the nonprofit sector, and/or business. This is designed as a two-year position, although there are occasional exceptions. Associates are involved in nearly every aspect of the Foundation and assume significant responsibility in our established and emerging education, advocacy, and outreach programming. On leaving the organization, alumni often pursue medical, public health, or business graduate degrees; others follow careers in industry, marketing, education, and policy. Some of our alumni cohort (past Associates from Close Concerns, dQ&A, & The diaTribe Foundation) are currently students, residents, or post-docs at Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Mount Sinai, Penn, Stanford, and UCSF.

● Overseeing program and logistical coordination for fundraising and convening events

● Some domestic and international travel may be required to attend major research meetings (including the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions in Orlando, FL in June 2018), advisory and regulatory meetings (often in Washington, DC), and other advocacy/outreach events

● Broad and deep exposure—with significant learning opportunities—to multiple facets of the healthcare industry, including clinical care, public health, nonprofits and other patient groups, drug development and regulation, medical technologies and mobile health, among others

● Opportunities to meet with international leaders in diabetes medicine and top business leaders in the healthcare field

● Opportunities to mentor high school students through our Junior STEM Associate summer enrichment program, aimed at enhancing young women’s engagement in science and healthcare

Requirements:

● Demonstrated academic excellence (minimum GPA of 3.6; occasional waivers granted depending on special circumstances and/or diabetes knowledge and interest)

● Exceptionally strong communication skills, with proficiency in writing and editing stressed

● Deep scientific background, strong critical thinking and analytic skills (research experience is an asset, but is not required)

● Outstanding interpersonal skills, high energy, and adaptability

● Excited to take ownership of projects, be pushed outside of the comfort zone, think outside of the box, and develop new skills

● The ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and responsibilities, working independently and within small teams

● Highly reliable, with acute attention to detail

● Experience with social media, graphic design, and online marketing is highly desirable, but not required
