 Summary of Position

Work with faculty, staff, and community partners to develop, implement, and administer community engaged learning (CEL) courses, research projects, and internships in the area of environmental sustainability. Collaborate with five other DCELs, each with a distinct thematic area (education, health, human rights, engineering, and identity), to develop and administer shared programs including faculty workshops, student internship preparation programs, and CEL grant programs.

*Please note, this is a 2-year fixed-term position with the possibility of extension. Applications will be reviewed beginning in early January. The position will remain open until filled. 

Core Duties

Working as a part of the Community Engaged Learning and Research team, and in collaboration with other campus and community partners, the DCEL – Environmental Sustainability position will strengthen and expand community engaged learning courses, research, and internships that focus on environmental sustainability. 

Specific duties include:

  • Develop and/or maintain a portfolio of community engaged learning courses (i.e. Cardinal Courses) that adhere to Stanford’s Principles of Ethical and Effective Service and foster civic leadership competencies through sound pedagogical practices;
  • Consult with faculty on community engaged learning pedagogy, including designing appropriate learning goals and instructional activities, facilitating student preparation and reflection, and evaluating student learning and community impact;
  • Prepare students to learn in community settings and help them reflect on their experiences;
  • Conduct outreach activities within relevant departments and programs to encourage community engaged learning course development, particularly among faculty who are not currently offering community engaged learning courses;
  • Develop and deliver faculty/instructional staff workshops and seminars;
  • Conduct outreach to relevant nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, private companies/corporations, etc., to identify appropriate course-based and internship possibilities;
  • Assist with marketing and communicating about community engaged learning opportunities;
  • Write and/or edit complex content for proposals, marketing materials, research grants, or other program activities.
  • May teach and/or assist in the teaching and administration of courses. Create and/or advise in the development of curriculum. May advise students and/or coach/mentor clients.
  • Contribute to and inform on strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability.

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

  • Advanced degree in environmental sciences or related field required; terminal degree preferred.
  • Three or more years of relevant professional experience required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Ability to influence without authority; comfort with ambiguity.
  • Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.
