Digital Scholarship Workshops, Spring 2018
Workshops take place from 11:10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Room 418a of the Central Library

The purpose of these workshops is to introduce students, faculty, and staff members at Vanderbilt University to new tools and techniques in the field of scholarly communications and digital scholarship. Upcoming offerings: 

Selecting an Appropriate Database for Your Digital Project

  • January 19: Fundamentals of Relational Databases

Relational databases are easily built and expandable to highlight natural relationships between data sets. This workshop will include information about the ideal structure of relational databases and provide a short introduction to Structured Query Language (SQL).

  • January 26: Fundamentals of Graph Databases

Graph databases are wonderful tools for analyzing and visualizing networks. This workshop will demonstrate how to load CSV data into Neo4j and to analyze it with the query language, Cypher.

  • February 2: Fundamentals of Document Databases

If you have lots of heterogeneous data, then document-oriented databases may be your solution. In this short workshop, we will show you how to set up Cloudant, a hosted version of CouchDB, and to query it using the map/reduce paradigm.

Building the Right Interface for Your Digital Project

  • February 9: Introduction to Interactive Data Analysis with R & Shiny

Serve out your statistical analyses in a polished, user-friendly web app. This session will focus on how to build an R script and launch a Shiny app complete with user interface (UI) and server.

  • February 16: Creating Reliable Interfaces with Elm

Are you looking for a simple language for building your interface? Learn how Elm makes developing front-end interfaces easier and more reliable.

  • February 23: Visualizing Information with D3.js

Do you want to create dynamic and interactive data visualizations? Join us for a short introductory workshop looking at the D3.JS JavaScript library and try out some code examples.
