Post-Doctoral Fellow (Computational Biology)

The Department of Infectious Disease at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center seeking a Post-Doctoral Fellow to contribute to projects that use a systems biology approach to study microbiome-host interactions in health and disease.

Job Role:

The incumbent will work on the ongoing research project understanding role of respiratory microbiome in early childhood respiratory diseases outcomes. The primary responsibly includes shotgun metagenomic sequencing data analysis and develop next-generation sequencing data analysis pipeline for clinical specimens. Integrating different layers of data obtained from metagenomics, metatranscriptome, immunological and clinical outcomes to defining the functional and dynamic interactions of host-microbial communities. Develop machine learning approaches to underpin the associations between host-microbial interactions and clinical outcomes after lower respiratory tract infections with virus in children. About 50% of efforts will be spent on predetermined research scope, developing a pipeline for metatranscriptome data analysis. 30% efforts to analyze data, which including utilizing specialized skills in statistics and machine learning to examine the clinical metadata data. 20% efforts to participate in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and presentations.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop bioinformatics pipelines for metagenomics and transcriptomics data analysis.
  • Create automated workflows for Next-generation sequencing (NGS) QC and analysis.
  • Participate in the innovation, design, and development of statistical and analytical solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with the Bioinformatics analysis, Biologist, and Clinicians to implement data analysis and data integration solutions.
  • Present data in the departmental meetings national and international conferences
  • Manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals.

Education, Skills, and Experience:

  • A Doctors degree in computer science, bioinformatics, information systems or another related field.
  • Knowledge of modern data storage techniques both in the cloud and on premise.
