Volunteers needed for Career Reading Pilot, Alignment Nashville

Posted by on Friday, February 9, 2018 in Announcements .

We are still looking for volunteers for the Career Reading Pilot. Volunteers will bring industry related publications, texts, and artifacts and discuss them with high school students in the health science academy at Glencliff High School. The program is to help 10th graders become more proficient in reading subject matter related to their career academy. Ultimately, the goal is to help raise ACT scores and overall college-readiness among these students.

If you are interested in volunteering for the pilot, you can read more about this pilot program on our website and can click here to sign up and respond to the ITP.

There is a volunteer training taking place next Friday, February 16, 2018, 8am-11am at Glencliff High School. We are asking each volunteer attending the training to bring a copy of a text that they might be considering using with the students.  Part of the training will ask them to interact with the text during the training. Examples of potential text/publications are below.

The pilot will run from Feb 22, 2018 – April 18, 2018 from 8:05am-9:05am on the following dates:

  • Thurs, Feb 22. 2018
  • Weds, Feb 28, 2018
  • Thurs, March 8, 2018
  • Weds, March 14, 2018
  • Weds, March 21, 2018
  • Thurs, March 29, 2018
  • Thurs, April 12, 2018
  • Weds, April 18, 2018

Examples of Industry texts, artifacts, and publications include but are not limited to the following:

  • Health related journal articles
  • Health/Medical Publications, magazine articles
  • Employee Handbooks
  • Annual Reports
  • Patient Charts and Case files (names removed)
  • Insurance or medical records (names removed)
  • Job descriptions

We are asking that publications that are brought are on the 9th grade reading level or higher. They can use the Lexile analyze tool to determine the reading level by copying and pasting an excerpt of the text at the link below. In order to access the tool, they will need to create a free account. We want to make sure to have a Lexile level at 1100, which is 9th grade, or higher. https://la-tools.lexile.com/free-analyze/

This will also be discussed at the training on Feb 16 at Glencliff High School.
