Educator Community Leader, Science Friday, Manhattan, New York or remote

Posted by on Monday, February 26, 2018 in Uncategorized .

At Science Friday, we’ve spent nearly 25 years exploring everything from the outer reaches of space to the tiniest microbes in our bodies. We’re great at broadcasting science, but we don’t stop there. We also make cool videos, publish original web reporting, and produce podcasts. Science education is core to this mission, and that’s why we need your help.

We’re looking for someone to be our new Educator Community Leader.

Science Friday works with a growing community of educators around the country to bring great science, engineering, and math stories to learners. We create original classroom resources, support educators as authors and leaders, and facilitate educator professional development and parent outreach. The Educator Community Leader will be responsible for nurturing our community of STEM educators by managing the Science Friday Educator Collaborative, our competitive publishing program for educators who create inventive classroom resources inspired by Science Friday media.

This position will also work directly with the Education Director to create educator communications, educator-authored resources, thoughtful educator workshops, and program evaluation to benefit the greater Science Friday Educate program.

The ideal candidate will be a great communicator and creative thinker with an unwavering passion for STEM education who absolutely loves working with other educators, remotely or face-to-face. The candidate should be a thoughtful connoisseur-critic of a wide variety of PD, OER, NGSS, PLN, PBL, and MOOC implementations, but also have an appreciation for important intangibles—the curiosity, joy, fellowship, pride, and creativity that fuels educators.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science or education required; graduate degree in science or education preferred;
  • At least two years of formal K-12 STEM teaching experience, additional experience in informal or formal education settings desired;
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver professional development and educational activities to large groups in-person, in online webinar environments, and/or on social media;
  • A positive attitude, operating with a high degree of integrity and honesty;
  • An understanding of the challenges educators face, with an awareness of the vast diversity of educational contexts in which educators do their work;
  • Willingness to travel to national conferences, events, and partner meetings on a monthly basis;
  • Outstanding digital communication skills with experience managing projects and professional correspondence with multiple stakeholders;
  • Ability to cultivate strong relationships with educators and administrators;
  • Highly skilled with online collaboration tools, including Google suite, web conferencing software, task management tools, and social networking platforms;
  • Effectively operate in a team-oriented environment, with an appreciation for working with a diverse group of colleagues;
  • Experience writing, editing, and revising educational content–including proofreading, formatting, and editing for clarity and accuracy–for a diverse audience;
  • Experience conducting educational research a plus;
  • Fluency reading and writing Spanish a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of the Educator Collaborative Program, including recruitment, selection, training, resource development, as well as the publication and promotion of participant resources.
  • Co-create and facilitate regular professional development trainings for live online and in-person audiences of 10-100 educators.
  • Interface directly with multiple professionals, including but not limited to staff and freelance editors, illustrators, digital producers, journalists, evaluators, and other educators to ensure that any resources developed through the ECP are of the highest quality.
  • Be a point person for general inquiries from educators about Science Friday content, online resources, PD opportunities, field-testing, evaluation, and educator programs.
  • Occasionally author original and engaging educational resources for educators that incorporate Science Friday multimedia, data collection, and inquiry.
