General Statement

The STEM Education Specialist is responsible for working with the STEM Education Outreach Director to develop, implement, direct, and monitor the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) educational outreach program at Southern Research. The STEM Education Specialist will assist with developing curriculum and engaging school districts throughout Alabama to enhance the state’s STEM activities. The STEM Education Specialist will collaborate with education and community partners to further the educational goals of students and teachers interested in the fields of science and engineering.

 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Excels in teaching STEM-related content at the high school level
  • Designs and articulates high school STEM curricula and programming
  • Organizes professional development opportunities in STEM education
  • Integrates STEM learning experiences across subjects
  • Works internally with scientists and engineers to develop curriculum and programming that align with the organization’s mission and educational outreach goals
  • Develops and manages relationships throughout Alabama to ensure the programming is consistent with the needs and direction of the state
  • Supports a process for the evaluation, selection, and acquisition of instructional materials, supplies, and equipment to enhance the STEM curriculum
  • Supports educational opportunities for students and teachers through outreach to both community and business resources
  • Works with the STEM Director to ensure continued visibility and growth of the STEM program
  • Prepares reports on an as-needed basis to illustrate effectiveness of the program and direction
 
Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters degree in either a STEM-related field or Education
  • 5 years’ classroom teaching experience in STEM related areas and/or experience in a STEM career field
  • Experience in computer science, engineering, and/or 3D printing
  • Strong writing skills 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in a relevant field
  • Established relationships with the Alabama educational community
  • Grant writing experience 
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Must have strong undergraduate aptitude in Science or Engineering
  • Ability to organize programs, personnel, and activities required for productive learning
  • Knowledge of the current theories, techniques and methodologies of STEM
  • Knowledge in the development of STEM curriculum design
