The Senior Manager of Professional Development will work in close collaboration with ASCB volunteer committees to manage the Society’s programs to provide professional development at all career stages, offer mentoring and networking to ASCB members, and increase participation of under-represented groups in the sciences.  The Senior Manager of Professional Development supervises a Program Coordinator. This position reports to the CEO and is located in Bethesda, MD.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Management

  • Develops new professional development programs including webinar series and workshops.
  • Assists in planning of year-round and Annual Meeting events and programs.
  • Works with volunteers and other staff to implement ASBC’s portfolio of professional development and diversity programs.
  • Provides customer service for program participants.
  • Works with communication staff to ensure that all programs and events are advertised through various media channels (newsletter, website, emails, social media).
  • Manages independent program evaluation.
  • Ensures programs align with strategic plan and fit into an overall portfolio of programs.

 Committee Management

  • In collaboration with the committee (co)-chairs, manages and administers the activities of the Minorities Affairs Committee, the Women in Cell Biology Committee, the Committee for Postdocs and Students, the LGBTQ+ task force, and other ad hoc committees or taskforces.
  • With committee chairs, plans conference call schedules and agendas.
  • Ensures action items are completed.
  • Develops and manages committee budgets.
  • Ensures that committee-related web pages are kept up to date.
  • With Program Coordinator, assist administration and implementation of committee programs with members and grant PIs.

Grant Management

  • Provides project management for current NIH R25 and NSF grants (which increase participation for underserved minorities) and includes oversight of deliverables, overall schedule and budgetary matters. Works with the ASCB Finance Department for federal grant oversight.
  • Identifies funding opportunities to support existing and new programs.
  • Assists with substantial writing on grant progress reports.

Writing and Scientific Expertise

  • Oversees writing grant proposals to federal agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, and private foundations.
  • Writes committee-related news articles for various media channels.
  • Answers staff’s science-related questions as needed.
  • Assists in development of promotional materials.

BACKGROUND

  • Master’s or higher degree in biological sciences or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Should have a passion for diversity and inclusion initiatives.
  • Understanding of professional development needs of biomedical scientists.
  • Strong interest in promoting, recruiting, and retaining minority, women, and trainees in science.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience with working with volunteers a plus.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Customer service orientation and the ability to adapt quickly.
  • Well versed in issues related to life science and science funding.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • A “doer” with a keen sense of urgency, excellent follow-up, and attention to detail.
  • Works well under pressure and on tight deadlines while maintaining professional relationships with colleagues at all times.
  • Demonstrates an interest in ASCB’s mission.
