Opportunity: Journalism Intern, Burness
Journalism Intern Position Description
We seek an in-house storyteller intern to report on what Burness, a leading public interest public relations firm, and our nonprofit clients are doing day-to-day and to share that “news” on multiple platforms. The person will work with people across the company to execute a variety of reporting and marketing activities as we seek to tell the story of our work and mission. The intern should be competent at writing professional-standard copy for offline and online platforms and producing multi-media content for print and broadcast purposes.
At Burness, we promote ideas that inspire and drive social change worldwide. Since our founding more than 30 years ago, we’ve worked with more than 500 nonprofits in the US and around the world. Our partners are changemakers mostly fighting poverty in broad areas such as health, science, environment, education, social policy, agriculture and forestry, global development and more.
Among other things, the story teller intern will:
- Write, shoot, create, edit and publish various types of content that are creative enough to stand out in constantly-moving feeds and overcrowded inboxes. As an in-house reporter, you should be able to translate the work Burness does. We need our research, data and policy actions to be converted into content that engages people online and offline
- Set up, test and send content on social media, email and website channels and platforms
- Pinpoint the news hook of a piece and produce clear, concise content that successfully conveys the story we are promoting
You are a great fit for this role if you can:
- Think creatively and strategically about ways to further the company’s mission and the work of our partners through various online and offline channels
- Manage multiple assignments at one time across several internal groups and juggle multiple pressing needs
- Know when to ask for help and how to problem-solve independently
- Never miss deadlines
The ideal candidate for this paid internship lives in the Washington, D.C. area and is a college or graduate student pursuing or having just completed her or his bachelor’s or master’s degree in Journalism or Communications (with demonstrated journalism experience). You should already think of yourself as a content creator with digital skills.
Strong writing and journalistic skills are important for the position, as is attention to detail, flexibility, deep interest in progressive social policy, and a curious mind. You should be willing to commute to our Bethesda, MD office part of the time.
Knowledge of and experience with Sprout Social, Facebook Ads Manager, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Mailchimp, website and social media content creation and publishing and basic HTML are a plus.
