Job Opportunity: Communications and Events Specialist, Graduate Biomedical Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham

This position writes, edits and designs communications and promotional materials (i.e. graduate school newsletter); determines most appropriate method of composition and distribution. Conducts interviews, generates story ideas and coordinates photography sessions. Creates and Serves as project manager for special events such as PhD hooding ceremony. Provides topical guidance as needed. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Write, edit, and maintain content for GBS communication outlets including student newsletter, faculty newsletter, calendar of events, GBS email inbox, live‐chat web feature, and social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Reddit).


2. Manage GBS application and admissions processes, including communicating with prospective students, maintaining admissions information on the GBS website, and serving as the liaison to theme admissions committees.


3. Plan and coordinate GBS events including new student orientation and various social gatherings. Assist with organizing Annual Research Symposium. Assist with recruitment weekends to include arranging itineraries, Skype interviews. Participate in on and off campus recruiting fairs.


4. Develop and coordinate GBS recruitment and marketing strategies to attract new students including print materials, promotional items, email campaigns, and online advertising.


5. Partner with departments across campus to track alumni outcomes, maintain relationships with alumni, and establish a development strategy.

6. Other duties as assigned.
 

Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Mass Communications or a related field and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement. Minimum hiring rate must meet the most current FLSA guidelines for salary level and basis to remain exempt. 

The ideal candidate should have student recruitment experience and excellent written and verbal communications skills.
