Internship opportunity: Clinical Data Analytics Intern, Ascension

The national health system operates more than 2,600 sites of care – including 151 hospitals and more than 50 senior living facilities – in 21 states and the District of Columbia, while providing a variety of services including physician practice management, venture capital investing, investment management, biomedical engineering, facilities management, clinical care management, information services, risk management, and contracting through Ascension’s own group purchasing organization.
The Clinical Data Analytics Intern will be responsible for researching evidence-based medicine guidelines and applying clinical definitions to EMR, adjudicated claims, and health risk assessment data to stratify populations and track clinical outcomes over time. The intern will be responsible for applying basic statistical tests to evaluate statistically significant changes in clinical values over time or differences between population subsets. The intern will have the flexibility to also perform more data science related duties based on the individual’s own curiosity and technical skillset.
The intern will:
- Work with department leaders and data scientists to develop a project plan and timeline.
- Gain experience manipulating and validating data from multiple sources including EMR and claims databases.
- Analyze the data bringing their own curiosity and expertise to meet the project objectives and deliver additional insights.
- Present final project to data science and clinical leadership.
- Gain hands on experience working in SQL, Python or their preferred analytic tool.
Internship details
- Internship will run Jan-Apr, with some flexibility based on the applicant’s schedule.
- Internship is paid, part time with flexible hours.
- Applicants are required to be actively enrolled in a bachelor’s or graduate degree program preferably in the field of statistics, biostatistics, data science, or equivalent.
- Applicants should be curious and self-motivated with a strong interest in healthcare.
- Previous experience with EMR and claims data is a plus.
- Basic proficiency of an analytic tool such as R, Python, SQL, or equivalent is required.
