The Program Specialist – Research Development and Support is part of the Office of the Vice Provost for Research at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor responsible for advancing research development and research support activities. Reporting to the Director, the position provides business continuity in the areas of research compliance, project management, and research development. The position works closely with faculty and administrators to advance research at Vanderbilt.

The Program Specialist is part of a team providing research development and support services to Vanderbilt within the Office of the Vice Provost for Research. The goal of the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) is to promote Vanderbilt’s distinctive research culture, which aspires to improve the human condition through path-breaking discovery and innovation. The office develops strategies and provides services to enhance extramural support for research, advance a cohesive and vibrant trans-institutional research agenda, build strategic partnerships around shared priorities in research, and maintain compliance with research related regulations and policies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with faculty to identify knowledge gaps and assesses training needs in the areas of research compliance and research development, and expand programs to educate the Vanderbilt community.
  • Support Vanderbilt programs for research compliance and adherences to federal laws, regulations, and institutional policies associated with research.
  • Provide research development services, including high-level conceptualization to match sponsor priorities, effective team organization, red-team review, and credible administrative management, to assist investigators in the complex process of developing competitive proposals to federal agency programs.
  • Create communications for promoting Vanderbilt research strengths to external stakeholders and sharing opportunities and best practices with the internal research community.
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and follow best practices for documentation and record-keeping.
Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
  • Ph.D. from an accredited institution of higher education is preferred.
  • Five years of expertise in research or research administration at a top research university is necessary.
  • Knowledge of biological safety, chemical safety, IRB, IACUC, and other aspects of research compliance is preferred.
  • Engineering research knowledge is preferred.
  • Prior experience with federal, industry, or foundation grant writing is preferred.
  • Prior experience in working with large cross-disciplinary faculty groups is preferred.
  • Strong team building, analytical, technical writing, and communications skills are necessary.
  • Demonstrated competence in interdisciplinary environments, communications, or research administration and familiarity with inter-university and inter-institutional collaborations is preferred.
  • Ability to assume a lead role in project management is necessary.
  • Experience working with private and/or public sector executives and high-level academic officials is preferred.
