Job Title: Genomics Research Scientist (part-time)

Reports to: Director of Research

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Note: This position may evolve over time to full-time employment.

 

IQuity Labs, Inc. uses genomic datasets to detect and monitor chronic disease. At IQuity, we developed game-changing blood tests using RNA data to accurately identify autoimmune disease earlier than current, conventional testing methodologies. The application of data science and machine learning is the core of our business and drives our technological development. IQuity and its partners are currently working to advance these RNA-based technologies to improve patient outcomes in chronic inflammatory disease including multiple sclerosis and inflammatory bowel disease.

 

Position Description:

The Genomics Research Scientist will work alongside other IQuity team members to perform gene expression studies using blood samples obtained from chronic disease patients. The ideal candidate will exhibit a high degree of professional excellence. Characteristics include, but not are limited to, sound, independent judgment, reliability, flexibility, and commitment to teamwork and communications.

 

The Genomics Research Scientist is required to conform to acceptable professional standards of conduct as defined by IQuity leadership. The Genomics Research Scientist requires minimal or no direct supervision, is able to work independently, and may be required to provide direction and guidance to other laboratory personnel.

 

Major Responsibilities

  • Performs various chemical procedures with patient specimens using analytical
  • Performs quality control procedures according to established protocol.
  • Performs remedial actions and records all quality control failures and corrective actions according to established protocol.
  • Verifies all assays are in control before releasing research data.
  • Performs and logs instrument maintenance according to established protocol.
  • Calculates results according to established protocol.
  • Prepares data extracts for review.
  • Follows established protocols for analysis, quality, and ancillary procedures.
  • Maintains laboratory reagent and supply inventories and notifies the appropriate person when inventory is low.
  • Judges acceptability of specimens and rejects/requests new specimens as indicated.
  • Answers telephone as necessary.
  • Prioritizes work effectively.
  • Checks lot numbers when restocking instruments or starting new kits.
  • Demonstrates troubleshooting skills.
  • Participates in internal and external continuing education when required, including research subject protection that may be required by the IQuity-desginated Institutional Review Board (IRB).
  • Participates in new employee orientation and training as required.
  • Participates and assists in method validation for new procedures and/or equipment.
  • Participates in developing/writing new procedures and revising old ones.
  • Maintains a clean work area and bleaches/sanitizes all countertops at end of shift.
  • Adheres to laboratory safety practices, including but not limited to OSHA bloodborne pathogens, HIPAA, and hazardous chemicals training and monitoring.
  • Cooperates and effectively communicates with laboratory and other personnel.

 

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s or higher preferred) in Medical Technology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, or Physics with:
    • 60 semester hours including 24 semester hours of medical lab technology; or
    • 60 semester hours including 24 hours of science that includes 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours of chemistry, biology; or,
  • The ideal candidate will have a familiarity with RNA/DNA extraction methods, next generation sequencing, and qRT-PCR.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Good communication skills in both written and oral form.
  • Reasoning skills to apply principles to draw valid conclusions, interpret technical instructions, etc.
  • Advanced math skills to set limits, understand and use CVs and SDs.
  • Abstract thinking to drive development.
  • Ability to recognize potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily secretions, and/or hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
  • Must be able to demonstrate the technical skills for routine experiments in the area of assignment within three months of initial hire date.
