What is the ASM Future Leaders Mentoring Fellowship?
Program Details
In the first year, mentees will be matched with a team of mentors and participate in skillset training, structured mentoring, community building and networking activities at ASM Microbe. In the second year, mentees will become peer mentors to the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) undergraduate students in the microbiology discipline and serve as ABRCMS session moderators. In an optional third year, selected mentees will be invited to serve as an ASM mentoring ambassador to incoming cohorts and an ABRCMS judge.
Eligibility
Mentee Eligibility
Mentees must meet the following criteria:
- Be an ASM member.
- Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or DACA eligible.
- Be from an underrepresented population (racial and ethnic backgrounds, individuals with disabilities and disadvantaged backgrounds).
- Be a senior undergraduate, postbaccalaureate or graduate student (master’s and doctoral).
- Plan to attend ASM Microbe.
- Have a primary area of interest or interdisciplinary studies within the microbial sciences.
- Commit to a two-year collaboration within mentoring relationships and incoming cohorts.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract for presentation at ASM Microbe. Preference will be given to individuals who have an accepted abstract to present at ASM Microbe.
Mentor Eligibility
Mentors must meet the following requirements:
- Be an ASM member.
- Be a nonstudent (e.g., postdoctoral scientists, research scientist, faculty or administrator in any employment sector)

Mentee Award Package
Each Fellow (mentee only) will receive:
- Year-round mentoring by mentor matching with experts in various career sectors in microbiology.
- A waiver for your first year of ASM membership. Fellows are responsible for membership dues after year 1.
- Complimentary registration to participate in ASM Microbe the year the award is given.
- Complimentary lodging to participate in ASM Microbe the year the award is given.
- Up to $1000 stipend to cover travel costs and other out of pocket expenses for ASM Microbe the year the award is given.
