A postdoctoral position is available in the Social Determinants of Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk Laboratory in the Cardiovascular Branch of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. Dr. Powell-Wiley is an NIH Earl Stadtman Investigator and Chief of the Social Determinants of Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk Laboratory at NHLBI.

The Powell-Wiley group studies the impact of chronic stress from environmental factors on the development of obesity and cardiovascular disease with the goal of identifying underlying mechanisms by which social and physical environmental stressors alter immune cell function and metabolism. The main goal of this translational research laboratory is to examine the regulation of immunometabolic pathways related to obesity and cardiovascular risk in natural killer (NK) and monocyte cell populations by neurotransmitters and/or specific chronic stressors. Furthermore, the laboratory is working to examine the effects of health behavior interventions on these immunometabolic pathways in humans to identify cellular and signaling pathways most amenable to changes in cardiovascular disease risk by health behavior change. The post-doctoral fellow’s position in the laboratory would be to perform immunometabolic phenotyping of the primary cells extracted from clinical study participants and then identify and characterize molecular pathways governing these effects. Subsequent intervention studies would then be implemented to evaluate whether obesity or psychosocial stressor amelioration will rescue these aberrant regulatory and immunometabolic pathways.  With an interdisciplinary research environment and strong intramural support, this position provides a unique opportunity for recent PhD awardees to deepen and broaden their research profile for advancing to an independent academic career. The lab is supported by state-of-the-art core facilities, like the flow cytometry, RNA sequencing, proteomics, bioinformatics, and advanced microscopy cores.

The ideal candidate must have a PhD or MD/PhD with a strong background in immunology molecular biology, and/or cell biology . Experience in the field of immunometabolism, neuroimmunology, psychoneuroimmunology, and/or neurotransmitter research is desirable but not necessary. The candidate must be within 5 years of receiving their doctoral degree and is expected to display a reasonable level of independence, be innovative and be a team player.

This position is fully supported by NIH intramural funds and successful candidates will be offered competitive stipend/health insurance commensurate with experience and accomplishments.
