Columbia University Irving Medical Center Rising Star Postdoctoral Recruitment: October 12-14, 2022

Are you interested in a career in academia? Are you a member of a group that has been historically underrepresented in the biomedical sciences? Are you interested in receiving mentoring throughout your postdoctoral training that will enhance your scientific training and application for faculty positions?

We invite you to apply for our Rising Star Postdoctoral Recruitment Event at the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons (VP&S) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC). All travel expenses will be covered for invited trainees. Our Rising Star Postdocs will have tailored mentoring, a cohort of postdocs to interact with regularly, small group meetings with leaders across CUIMC, faculty mentoring committees in addition to your PI, and opportunities to attend national meetings in your research field.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants will obtain their PhD within approximately 12 months at the time of application
  • Applicants are US Citizens and members of a group that is underrepresented in the biomedical sciences as defined by the NIH:
    • Underrepresented racial/ethnic groups include: Blacks, African Americans, Hispanic/Latinos, American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders; Individuals with disabilities; Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, defined as those who meet two or more of the following criteria

To Apply:

Applications are due by August 1, 2022, as a single PDF file emailed to Dr. Sandra Ryeom at swr2117@cumc.columbia.edu, and must include:

  • Research statement (500 words or less)
  • Research interests and career goals (500 words or less)
  • Keywords to describe your research interests (3-5)
  • CV
  • List up to 4 faculty members with whom you would like to meet (see list of eligible
  • faculty here)
  • A letter of recommendation from your thesis advisor should be sent under separate cover to Dr. Sandra Ryeom at swr2117@cumc.columbia.edu

Postdocs selected for this program will meet monthly for workshops, professional developmental programs, and personal development programs, including:

  • Workshops through the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) on topics such as how to give an effective chalk talk, how to give an effective science talk, how to write a science paper, how to network, etc.
  • Grant writing workshops/NIH Program officers
  • Monthly lunches with CUIMC leaders
  • Mental health and wellness workshops (on topics such as imposter syndrome, learning how to handle microaggressions, etc.)
  • Outreach opportunities (journal club for undergraduate diversity trainees at City College, HBCUs or small institutions, etc.)

2 . Does the invitation to the CUIMC Rising Stars Recruitment guarantee a job offer?

  • Not necessarily, but our goal is to have each candidate interview with 3-4 labs to find the right lab.

3. Will I need to prepare an oral presentation?

  • Yes! All invited participants will present a 30-minute seminar on their graduate work and will be mentored by Columbia faculty via Zoom prior to the event on presenting an effective seminar.
