Position Description
The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at San Francisco State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Chemical Education. New faculty will begin work in August 2023. The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is deeply committed to both high-quality teaching and research at the undergraduate and master’s level in a multicultural, equitable, and inclusive learning environment. A successful candidate will share this commitment and will contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community through their teaching, research, and service activities. The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry is home to 400 undergraduates, 30 master’s degree students, 20 part-time lecturer faculty, and 14 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty. The Department has a reputation for actively engaging students in research activities leading to publication, presentations, and academic success. Our mission is to educate our students in the essential principles and practices of chemistry and biochemistry, and to inspire our students to reach their personal and professional goals as they become the next generation of scientists, scientific professionals, and scientifically literate individuals.

Position responsibilities: The Chemical Education position requires primarily undergraduate teaching in our core curriculum, including general chemistry, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, developing an active research program in chemical education that will enhance our department’s teaching mission, and ongoing committee and service assignments.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Ph.D. in broadly defined chemical sciences;
- Post-doctoral experience chemical education, or closely related fields;
- Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students.
Preferred:
- A record of teaching in chemistry, a sub-discipline of chemistry, and/or suitable teaching experience to support chemical education research;
- Active record of research and scholarship related to specialty area and evidence of the potential for external funding of these activities;
- Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching and scholarship activities;
- Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities;
- Record of contributing to supportive and collaborative work environments.
