Associate Editor and Writer, Scientific Communications

The Vanderbilt School of Medicine Basic Sciences seeks the service of an Associate Editor and Writer specifically for Scientific Commuinication to fill an available position.
The Associate Editor and Writer will write or edit articles on the latest discoveries, awards, and news of the Basic Sciences community (faculty, staff, graduate students, and postdocs). They will gather relevant news to promote through different media, including email newsletters and social media. The Associate Editor will report to the Director of External Affairs, Partnerships, and Communications. They will work closely with the Editor and Writer for Scientific Communications and Social Media. The position will engage with students, postdocs, faculty, center/core directors, the Vanderbilt Division of Communications, Development, and Alumni Relations, and support staff in the dean’s office and across campus.
The Vanderbilt School of Medicine Basic Sciences Office of the Dean is the administrative unit overseeing a school of four departments and ten centers. Basic Sciences is a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment that fosters new discovery and research innovation in the biological and biomedical sciences.

Duties and Responsibilities
Writing
-Write articles about news, awards, high-impact papers, etc. relevant to Basic Sciences, to be published on the Basic Sciences or the Vanderbilt Research News websites and/or for Vestigo, the Basic Sciences magazine.
-Assist with creating content for the different email newsletters (Basically Speaking, Vital, The Reading List).
-Write copy for social media (Twitter and Instagram) to promote research, research papers, events, awards, achievements, and more.

Editing
-Edit articles written by staff writers, interns, and/or freelance writers for the web.
-Engage in multiple types of editing (developmental editing, line editing, proofreading) for articles destined for Vestigo.
-Assist with copy editing content coming out of the Office of the Dean.

Other
-Track faculty publications in a database.
-Help with assorted tasks pertinent to the goals of the communications team at the Office of the Dean of Basic Sciences.
-Collaborate with the communications teams of Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center to highlight important discoveries/events and coordinate their dissemination in the local community and beyond.
-Brainstorm with partners and the communications team on new approaches to take to increase local and widespread awareness of the research conducted at Basic Sciences.

Experience and Skills
Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate work experience is necessary.
3-5 years of experience in science communication is necessary.
Knowledge of Vanderbilt systems is preferred.
Supervisory Relationship
This position reports to the Director of Communications.
This position does not have supervisory responsibility.
