The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)—one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)—is seeking to recruit outstanding, highly creativescientists for positions at the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) as tenure-track investigators (equivalent to assistant or associate professor-level academic faculty) to advance visionary and field-leading basic, translational, and applied research aimed at developing safe and effective novel vaccines and therapeutics against infectious diseases to improve public health outcomes.

The VRC’s mission is to apply the latest concepts in disease pathogenesis and immunology as well as scientific and technological innovation to design, develop, and manufacture pilot clinical lots and to clinically evaluate investigational vaccines, antibody-based products, and other biomedical interventions. VRC has consistently been at the forefront of major breakthroughs and technological innovations that materially and substantively improve human health, with a research portfolio that includes HIV, coronaviruses, influenza, malaria, tuberculosis, flaviviruses, filoviruses, alphaviruses, paramyxoviruses, and other biothreats and emerging pathogens. VRC has a highly focused and specialized organizational structure within the intramural research program of NIH, with an integrated, collaborative, and multidisciplinary approach that maximizes scientific discovery to generate prototype vaccines and biologics for clinical studies as well as to accelerate their development. For more information about VRC, its organization, and its research portfolio, visit here.

VRC is seeking to hire early- to mid-stage investigators who share the VRC’s vision for collaboration, mentorship, and the application of transdisciplinary approaches to develop vigorous independent research programs in the following areas of focus: immunology, virology, structural biology, bioengineering, and/or closely related fields. The ideal candidate will be an exceptional investigator with expertise in one or more of these areas and will be expected to develop exciting research programs that include basic and/or translational research that integrate with the VRC’s mission. Applicants must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in a relevant field with postdoctoral or resident experience as well as a strong publication record demonstrating potential for creative research.

Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments. A full civil-service package of benefits (including retirement; health and life; and a Thrift Savings Plan) is available. Women and people from groups underrepresented in biomedical research are especially encouraged to apply. U.S. citizenship is not required, and resident or nonresident aliens eligible to obtain a valid employment-authorizing visa are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must submit the following items (please note the first three items must be submitted in PDF format):

  1. A curriculum vitae (CV) or biosketch including a list of publications

  4. A description of your leadership, mentoring, and outreach activities that highlight your commitment to increasing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in science (please note this is an important part of the application that will be rated).
  5. In addition to the above requirements from the applicant, at least three reference letters must be submitted directly from the referees.

All materials should be submitted to NIAIDVRCPCSS@niaid.nih.gov. Applications will be reviewed starting April 15, 2023 andwill be accepted until the positions are filled.
