Postdoctoral Intramural Research Fellowship Position

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

A postdoctoral fellowship position is available in the TSE/Prion Molecular Biology Section of the Laboratory of Persistent Viral Diseases in the Division of Intramural Research, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, located at the Rocky Mountain Laboratories (RML) in Hamilton, Montana. This section uses in vivo and in vitro models to study the molecular mechanisms underlying prion pathogenesis in order to identify effective anti-prion therapeutics. The section primarily uses rodent models of prion disease to determine how prions establish infection and how prion protein misfolding determines disease phenotypes. The section also studies mitochondrial dysfunction during neurodegeneration and general mechanisms of protein misfolding and spread, all of which are areas of research that are also applicable to other protein misfolding diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

RML offers state-of-the-art facilities for genomics, proteomics, DNA microarray, electron microscopy, and biological imaging in a recently renovated laboratory. The laboratory is located in the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana. In 2010, RML was ranked 6th in The Scientist magazine’s survey of the “Best Places To Work” for postdoctoral research fellows.

Trainees will receive a stipend commensurate with their experience, and health insurance benefits are available. Preference will be given to those candidates with experience and a background in mitochondrial isolation and functional assays, molecular pathogenesis of infectious diseases, and/or animal models of infection.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D., D.V.M., or M.D.
